How to install a steel tub.

Install the tub---press the tub down til the back hits the ledger and the skirt bottoms out against the floor---do not step into the tub---that will compress the mud and leave a hollow--. Add a few screws with small washers to hold the tub to the studs---leave it alone until the mud is set--.Steel tubs are usually between 150 and 200 pounds. Acrylic tubs come in around at only 50 to 100 pounds. Because of this difference, acrylic tubs are usually preferred when a hometown chooses to install the tub themselves. Another big point to consider is corrosion. In the steel vs. acrylic bath debate, acrylic is the clear winner. Take a bit of plumber’s putty, roll it in your hands and place it on the underside of the drain flange. Position the drain shoe on the underside of the tub and screw the drain flange into the threads. Tighten it completely with the drain wrench tool and remove any excess putty. Polish the surface. When the chips are filled, use a sander or utility knife to even the surface and make it smooth. 4. Protect the area. Before applying the paint, make sure to cover the area with some sort of tarp or protective cover so that you do not apply the paint to undesired areas. 5. Apply the paint.
